Sample
Intimate mixture of 95wt% water ice particles (67±31 μm) and 5wt% pyrrhotite grains (25-50 μm) at 173 K (this sample)
Processing steps
Step Chronology Date Type Process Changes
#1 before layer formation mixing We mixed the weighted amounts of pyrrhotite powder and ice particles in an aluminium bottle, pre-cooled with liquid nitrogen, using a vibration mixer. Ice and pyrrhotite particles are mixed at the particle scale.
#2 during layer formation layer formation Inside the freezer, we sieved the ice-kerite mixture (mesh size 400 µm) to fill the sample holder and removed excess material with a spatula to obtain a flat surface, without compacting. The sample holder and spatula had been pre-cooled with liquid nitrogen. Sample with a flat surface
