Matter
Name
Glassy silicate (1-x)MgO-xSiO2 x=0.40, powder
Family
solid
Origins
laboratory
Preparation
raw
Method
Glass synthesized by CO2 laser heating and melting (< 5s) of a sintered mixture of oxides having the desired stoichiometry. The oxide mixture is levitated in a controlled Ar gas flow jet (Kalampounias et al; 2009). The resulting glass spheres (~1mm) were ground by hand in an agate mortar until (sub)micronic sizes are reached.
